Within the last 4 years we have seen
an influx of small tuna in the 30-60 lb range. These fish
have really gotten my blood pressure to rise. We spent the first
two years pulling our hair out trying to get these extremely
finicky fish that have superb vision to bite our baits.
After
a few years of trial and error we
know what it takes to catch them. The methods we will utilize
to boat these fish will include trolling, live bait and casting
lures with spinning gear to get these
speed demons. Our preferred method will be sight fishing for
them. What we will do is look for tuna that are
actively feeding, which is an incredible sight to see. We will ease up into these fish and cast
lures to them, when we hook-up you'd better hang on. The
line will start singing off the real and the fight is on.
It is such an adrenalin rush. A typical fight will be no less
then 30 minutes and can go on for hours. They are an extremely
hard fighting fish that can swim in excess of 40
mph, Some experts believe they can reach bursts in excess of
60 mph.
These charters will cost a few more dollars then a striper or
bluefish charter due to the amount of gas we will have to use and the cost of the gear being used.
Just to give you and example the line on one spinning reel costs
about $80. We will limit these charters to 3 people. I also
feel that everyone needs to know that this isn't a fishery that you
will catch a lot of fish and if you boat 1 or 2 fish in a charter
that is considered a good day. The fish aren't always in the
area and I will only run these trips when the odds are stacked in
our favor.
